What Is the Bexley 11+ Test?

The Bexley 11+ Test assesses a child’s ability across key areas required for grammar school education. Specifically, GL Assessment administers the test, which consists of two multiple-choice papers lasting around 50 minutes each.

In particular, this test covers:

  • First, Verbal Reasoning and Comprehension – Evaluating language and logical reasoning skills.
  • Next, Non-Verbal Reasoning – Assessing problem-solving using patterns and visual sequences.
  • Finally, Mathematical Reasoning – Testing numeracy and problem-solving abilities.

Students record their answers on a machine-readable answer sheet, and the test divides into timed sections.

Where Is the Bexley 11+ Test Taken?

While most students take the test at designated test centres, some schools administer their own selection test. This means that some children will sit the test in a familiar school setting, while others may be in a different school or an external test centre.

For students sitting the test in an unfamiliar location, this change in environment can sometimes cause anxiety or nervousness. This is why familiarising them with exam conditions through realistic mock tests is highly beneficial.

Scoring and Admissions

As with most 11+ tests, the Bexley 11+ Test has no set pass mark but scores are weighted relatively against how other students have performed. They also age-standardise scores to ensure fairness for younger candidates.

Key facts about the scoring process:

  • The top 180 scoring students are automatically eligible for a grammar school place, regardless of home address.
  • Approximately 800 grammar school places are available across Bexley.
  • Each year, over 6000 students taking the test.
  • As a result, the final cut-off score for admission varies each year depending on results and demand.
