3 Things Nobody Tells You About The 11+ Exams

Seeking advice about your child’s 11 Plus exam? Want to know how to pass the 11 Plus exams? Good thing friends and family are always there to lend you an ear. Most of them are even eager enough to help you out with a few recommendations. Although it’s great to get a second opinion, the problem is that sometimes, they may have opposing suggestions from each other.

This leaves you even more confused, anxious and torn apart between options. As 11 Plus exam deadlines are fast approaching, there just isn’t enough time for thinking and considering possibilities. Whose advice should you be listening to in times like these?

You begin to wonder if your friends are telling you the truth. Surely, if their children made it through to a selective / grammar school, that could only mean that their advice is true. So why are your in-laws telling you otherwise? Is there something nobody is telling you about the 11 Plus exams?

A Parent’s RESPONSIBILITIES

As parents, we are expected to lead our children towards their success. Our children rely on us to make decisions that will benefit them and their future. But what most people don’t see is that parents do get pressured and confused a lot more often than they think – especially with something as important as the 11+ exams and selective secondary school

Trust An Expert

Receiving advice from friends and family isn’t a bad thing, but the more productive way to handle the situation is to simply ask an expert. Tutor Rise makes the effort of being updated with the 11+ exams. We do our best to work out creative methods of teaching that will benefit both parents and students. Our doors (and email inboxes) are always open to those who are seeking help with their exams.

The various pieces of advice you may receive from people around you can be very overwhelming. Talking to expert 11 Plus tutors at a tuition company dispels your worries and answers all your questions. At Tutor Rise, we tell you all our secrets on how to pass the 11+ exams, and then some. Here are some things people might not be telling you…

3 Things Nobody Tells You About The 11+ Exams

1. Your Child Doesn’t Have To Study EVERYTHING

Many parents have the impression that their child must know everything in order to pass the 11+ exam. That they need to be able to answer all questions thrown at them correctly to be considered an excelling student. However, there is only so much your child can learn within a short period of time, and asking them to memorize every small detail will just burn them out.

The key is to teach solid core skills and to instil excellent study habits. Doing so creates a strong foundation which your child can use even after passing the exam. Learning is not all about digesting information and storing it in your brain, it should be applied as well.

2. 11 Plus Tuition Isn’t Enough

Just because you have entrusted part of your child’s education to a tutor, this does not mean that parents no longer need to be involved in their child’s studies. Some parents think that hiring a tutor means that they can simply send their child to lessons and do nothing else in between and that that will be enough for their child to pass the 11 Plus exam. This is definitely not true.

As much as we love spending time with our students at Tutor Rise, we know that our students need the participation and support of their parents as well. Tutors are responsible for making difficult lessons a lot easier to understand, but parents are needed to help their child with the extra work that is done outside of the 11 Plus lessons.

The good thing is that helping your child at home does not have to be some boring textbook lecture, we have devised plenty of ways to help you make home learning a fun process.

3. It Is OK to Make Mistakes

Low scores are never an easy thing to accept. With standards constantly being set so high, it is no wonder children struggle with preparing for their 11 Plus exams. With that said, parents must support their children emotionally when their child does not get their desired score as it can be very disheartening. It is simply OK not to get 100% in every test.

We at Tutor Rise pride ourselves on helping children improve their scores and make notable progress both for preparing for their 11 Plus exam and at school.

Trust Your Judgement

No one knows your child the way you do. Set up plans together with your child and see if those plans are something they are willing to work out with. Let them understand the importance of passing their 11+ exams, giving them a chance to carry out a responsibility.

In the end, no matter what other people say, a parent knows what is best for their children. After hearing advice from different people, trust your own judgment and believe that those decisions were made for the benefit of your child.
